Learning & Development

How will your child be learning?

The new Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) describes the time in your child’s life between birth and age 5. It is a very important stage, as it helps your child get ready for school as well as preparing them for their future learning and successes.

From the day your child is born up until the age of 5, their early years experience should be happy, active, exciting, fun and secure; and support their development, care and learning needs.

Your child will be learning skills, acquiring new knowledge and demonstrating their understanding through 7 areas of learning and development.

Children should mostly develop the 3 prime areas first:

  • Communication and language
  • Physical Development
  • Personal, social and emotional development

These prime areas are those most essential for your child’s healthy development and future learning.

As your child grows, the prime areas will help them to develop skills in 4 specific areas:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive arts and design

These 7 areas are used to plan your child’s learning and activities. Our expert staff who are teaching and supporting your child will make sure that the activities are suited to your child’s unique needs.

Children in the EYFS learn by playing and exploring, through creative and critical thinking, and being active – all of which takes place both indoors and outside.

Here at Saddleworth Stars we are keen to get the very best from each and every child. We have found a unique way to do this by planning “In the Moment”.

Planning in the moment is all about seizing the moment for children to progress. It is based on what the children are already deeply involved in, this way of planning relies on skilled practitioners using quality interactions to draw out the children’s knowledge and build on it there and then (in the moment).

Planning in the moment is all about capturing the moment of engagement and running with it to make sure the children progress.

Progress Checks and Profiles

Our highly skilled staff maintain meticulously detailed records of your child’s learning and progress with us. From initial assessment stage to room (age dependent) transition to 2 year old progress check and to reception class we ensure that our robust systems are consistent throughout the nursery. Our staff are trained to maintain records with a consistently high level of detail, and to use all these systems together – planning, observation, assessment- to significantly enhance the progress of each child on an individual basis.

When your child is 2, our staff will give you a written summary of how your child is progressing against the 3 prime areas of learning:

  • Communication and language
  • Physical Development
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development

This highlights areas where your child is progressing well and any areas where they might need some extra help or support.

Transition to school

It’s a huge progression moving from nursery to school and we want to ensure that this is as hassle free as possible for you and your child.

We work closely with the local schools and the extended community throughout your child’s time with us to ensure we make that transition as smooth as possible when the time comes.
