Nursery of the Year Winner - North - 2017

Children, staff and parents at Saddleworth Stars Nursery in Scouthead, Oldham have been celebrating this week after cleaning up at the recent NDNA awards presented by TV’s Johnny Ball.

The National Day Nurseries Association judges decision was unanimous at the Nursery Of The Year awards last week. During the awards ceremony Saddleworth Stars nursery in Scouthead, Oldham beat hundreds of nurseries from the North of the UK before going on to conquer the ‘best of the best’ nurseries from around the world to win the coveted ‘Overall Nursery Of The Year 2017’.

Thousands of day nurseries from all over the UK and overseas are members of the National Day Nursery Association. The competition process for Nursery Of The Year started months ago based on votes from parents, along with comments and compliments regarding their experience at nursery and how well they feel their children are cared for. After being shortlisted as a finalist the NDNA then sent an inspector to join the nursery for a day and watch the team at work before providing a detailed report of their findings to the international judging panel. Tough competition from childcare settings in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, England, Scotland, Wales and other areas proved no match for the outstanding Saddleworth Stars as all the judges agreed that the Stars really shine brighter in Saddleworth. Other nurseries in the Saddleworth area have tried to win the coveted award in the past but failed to get enough votes to be shortlisted. This makes the award even more special as it is the first time that Saddleworth Stars have been entered in the competition.

Nursery manager Kim Ratcliffe moved to Oldham and joined Saddleworth Stars in 2016 after hearing about the high level of care at the industry-leading nursery. “I am so proud to be part of the Saddleworth Stars family” said Kim, “When I first met owners Tory and Rafael Fernandez I realised that their vision for childcare made Saddleworth Stars a truly special place where the children would always come first. Every child in our care is respected as an individual and our lives are dedicated to making each day at the nursery fun, safe, exciting and full of happiness.”

Owner Tory Fernandez said “Winning this award has been an overwhelmingly emotional time for us. We have all cried tears of joy – even my husband! We try our best every day to make our nursery a place of joy and happiness for the children so to be recognised by NDNA is amazing. The NDNA judges were unanimous in their decision but we still feel that our true judges are the children at Saddleworth Stars each day. If they’re happy then we’re happy too!”

This is the latest award for Saddleworth Stars in a recent string of high profile achievements. The nursery on Huddersfield Road in Scouthead has also been recognised by Inclusion Quality Mark and given the IQM award for their inclusive care- this award was then raised to the level of ‘Centre Of Excellence’ to properly acknowledge their standards. Just a few weeks ago an Ofsted inspector classed the nursery as ‘Outstanding in ALL areas’. Saddleworth Stars is also the only nursery in the area to be awarded ‘Millie’s Mark’ which recognises that all staff members are properly trained in paediatric first aid. The Ofsted inspector stated that “The management team is visionary. The staff team works extremely closely and share the same aspirations in their pursuit of excellence. Staff are excellent role models for children and provide the highest levels of care”.

The Overall Nursery Of The Year Award was presented in a ceremony at Old Trafford by TV’s Johnny Ball who said “Saddleworth Stars impressed judges with it’s focus on each child’s individuality, strong links with the wider community, parent partnerships, attitude towards diversity, imaginative story-scribing and magical garden area.”

An NDNA spokesperson said “Saddleworth Stars is a place of happiness and enjoyment for all with lots and lots of laughter”.

SADDLEWORTH NURSERY THE FIRST & ONLY CHILDCARE SETTING IN THE U.K. TO RECEIVE ALL 3 PRESTIGIOUS AWARDS
March 2017

Children and staff at Saddleworth Stars Nursery in Scouthead, Oldham have been celebrating this week after receiving the Millie’s Mark award in recognition of the high quality and skills of their childcare practitioners.

The Millie’s Mark award is given only to those childcare settings that can prove they exceed the national requirements for paediatric first aid and care for children.

Owner Tory Fernandez said “The national standard in childcare settings has for too long only required that one person on site be qualified in paediatric first aid. This means that in many nurseries the person looking after a child may not have the knowledge to help them in a medical situation. Since we started Saddleworth Stars Nursery 3 years ago we have always ensured that every single member of staff receives full training so that all the children are always with a qualified person. Mille’s Mark is an award given to nurseries that can prove this level of care.”

In November an Ofsted inspector classed the nursery as ‘Outstanding in ALL areas’.

The Ofsted inspector said “The management team is visionary. The staff team works extremely closely and share the same aspirations in their pursuit of excellence. Staff are excellent role models for children and provide the highest levels of care”.
